Spring Colors for a Rainy Day

Since it’s been raining and not much can be done outside, I’ll share a few pictures I took a couple weeks ago at my in-laws house. If you remember I did some wildflower hunting (Yellow Corydalis, False Garlic, Sedum puchellum) while we were there. Today I’ll show you the more cultivated side of their yard.

Here are a couple blossoms off their fruit trees. They have several trees planted including apples, plums, cherries and peaches.

What spring would be complete without the shining golden yellow of a forsythia?

For spring color and smell hyacinths are a great pick. They have several different colors planted. Here you can see a purple-lavender colored hyacinth next to the green foliage of a Spanish lavender.

A close-up, but I guess you guessed that!

Some of the hyacinths are mixed together, here white and purple.

Here’s a pink one. I don’t particularly like pink flowers but it does have color and if you look real close you can see that this hyacinth has a kind of variegated petal with a mixed of white and pink.

Here’s a more magenta-pink colored hyacinth.

Here is a deciduous magnolia bud about to break. The picture is a little fuzzy since the wind was moving and it was hard to focus, but you can at least get an idea of the color.

Muscari or grape hyacinths are scattered about adding a little color accent to the spring landscape.

That’s it for now, I hope you enjoyed my rainy day!

  1. Lovely. I don’t plant bulbs like hyacinth or crocus anymore. They just help my rabbits get fat and it’s too discouraging to wait for them to arrive only to have them chewed to bits. I’ll continue to enjoy them through blogs like yours. Thanks.

  2. You must visit the in laws a bunch! That is a good thing. Mine live in western NC so it is a bit of a trip, but worth it. They don’t garden so every time I visit I plant something for them so they can think of us. Right now the 60 pink tulips are blooming. That is what gardens are for aren’t they?

I love the saucer magnolia photo.

  3. Joy,

Spring is coming along, I’m glad it’s hitting your neck of the woods finally. What’s popping up up there?

    Jane Marie,

Those rabbits can be a problem. We have several around here. I’m going to need some quick fencing to put up around the garden, or it may turn into more of a rabbit feast than a garden.

    Tina,

We go up every few weeks or so. Those pictures were from the last trip, which was about 2 weeks ago now. Wow sixty tulips! Mass color or multicolor?

    Nancy,

Thanks! I enjoyed that poem of yours. 🙂

  4. Pink Impression tulips, all the same color. I bought like 300 bulbs for pennies. I was feeling generous giving up 60-20%-isn’t really alot out of 300 but my mother in law likes them and called to tell me they are blooming. I am surprised because they are in the mountains and I would think they are a bit behind us, but it seems right on schedule or a bit early because mine aren’t all blooming yet. Too bad they don’t last long. Forgive me but I am glad I answered Jillybean’s question before you. We just got back from Chili’s-what a treat! Plus I had another gift card from Borders-aren’t these cards nice? I seem to recall you got a few for Christmas which you spent on some gloves?

  5. Tina,

Our tulips aren’t up yet either, they have started but appear to be a ways off before blooming. Chili’s sounds good, we’re getting one down here soon! The gloves were a different present. I bought a Yoshino Cherry a Red Maple and some dirt with my gift card. 🙂

  6. Yup, now I remember the Cherry and when you planted it. My memory fails me-trying to keep up with everyone’s blogs (mine too which I forget sometimes as well-lol). Tulips are coming. What color did you plant?

  7. Our tulips are purple and white. They aren’t solid colors though, sort of a mix of the two. Hopefully the pattern I planted them in will look good!
