Bluebirds and the Garden in the Snow

Today was a snow day. The kind of day that happens here in Tennessee on occasion where 6-8 inches of snow fall upon us and whiten up the landscape for a few hours. It melts fast which is good for those who need to travel but unfortunately not for those who attend school!

This little bluebird was the first to greet us this morning from the gutter on our garage.

He glanced up at the photographer taking the picture as if to wonder what all the fuss was about.

He seems to be saying “What’s so interesting about me?”

The daffodils appear stunned at the turn of events. Here they are, ready to bloom, yet they are mostly buried beneath the snow. They should be fine as the snow will melt away, leaving behind only the daffodil and this picture as evidence of its passing.

The arborvitae is nearly unrecognizable beneath the weight of the snow.
The hollies in the front look very festive with the white top dressing. It almost feels like Christmas!
The Mediterranean White Heath is truly white this day.
The rosemary in the front garden can’t help but bow down to the superior force of Mother Nature. If this snow was going to last I would brush it off of the rosemary to keep the branches from breaking. This isn’t necessary since the snow left by this afternoon.

It’s a garden under snow, incomplete, but still a garden. Progress has been made toward the realization of the new layout but completion is a few days away. Maybe this week with temperatures predicted to be in the 50’s and 60’s work can resume. At least snow won’t be a factor!

Snow is a pleasant experience for us down here in the south most of the time. This is probably the one last breath of Old Man Winter for us here in TN. I say probably because you never know how the weather will change but soon temperatures will be rising and we’ll be spending time taking pictures of plants and not pictures of snow!

  1. Dave,

Wonderful bluebird photos. We are getting what you got today this evening here in NC. I see you list my feed, it is days old as I switched to feedburner from blogger. Not too sure what to do about it.

  2. Dave, it hard to believe that you are just a county or two over from us! We got a dusting of snow and it was all gone within hours of the sun’s appearance! You did get a lot! I wish there was snow on the garden right now~~ It’s the 20 degree weather that concerns me. You’re right in a few days it will be warm again! It’s like this every March!

Your bluebirds are wonderful…they must love your open yard! I know they are here in the garden…I can hear them in the trees, but can’t see them!

  3. I love the bluebird pics. I am going to have some angry bluebirds .. ran out of mealworms this morning and didn’t go out and get more. oops!

  4. Hi Dave, I love the bluebird in the snow. Our birds are getting happier by the day as our snow is melting. Rain in the forecast (I hope that is all, no snow). I hope your snow melts fast so you can get back in the yard.

  5. Beautiful photos of the bluebird Dave. The snow looks so pretty too. Hopefully Old Man Winter is getting tired and ready for a rest.

  6. Randy,

The snow will come and go very quickly I’m sure! We have a little still on the ground but it will be gone tomorrow. I’m not sure what to do about Feedburner either I migrated a while back so my Botanical feed would work.

    Gail,

They do seem to like t here. One of my projects this year will be to build a bluebird house or two to put around he yard. They especially like it when I leave dirt exposed as the worms are easy to get. Of course they like my juicy selection of grubs out there too!

    Debbi and Catherine,

Bluebirds are one of my favorite birds. Their color is great, especially against a white backdrop.

    Janet,

Uh-oh, you know what angry birds do don’t you…better get some worms quick! 😉

    Thanks Sheila!

    Racquel,

I really didn’t expect to see more than a dusting so you may be in for more than you realize!

    Tina,

Funny how that works. In March we seem to be right in the path of snow. All the biggest snows I remember happen in March. 1993 comes to mind!

    Cameron,

You’ll probably end up with some warm temperatures later in the week. If we can hold on for a couple days we’ll make it!

    Heather,

I’ll have to wait a couple days for things to dry a bit more. The birds seem happy. The goldfinches are getting more color and stuff is starting to green up.

    Darla,

I certainly hope so! I’m ready for the greener days ahead!

  7. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more but I’m ready for spring. The bluebird photos are great. I wish I could attract those but I think they prefer more open spaces. They sure are pretty.

  8. Hi Dave, how beautiful. I love the bluebird. If you were looking down at him you must have been shooting from a window above? He is too sweet and looks very cold. We got no snow at all, but a whole lot of rain that was needed and welcome. The wind about blew us away though!

  9. Dave, I saw your Tennessee snow on TV yesterday and spoke of you. 🙂 I meant to check your blog then to see just how much you’d received. Ample, I should say. 🙂 Everything looks very wintry — fortunately for you, you’ll be back to spring-like temps within days. The little bluebird is adorable.

  10. Dave, I hate to tell you, but you misunderstood that bluebird. What he really said was, “Could you put away that stupid camera down and give me a hand? My feet are stuck to this gutter and I’m freezing my tail off!”

  11. Like everyone else, I have to say the bluebird is adorable. I’m surprised he stayed long enough for you to take pictures! I’m sure it wasn’t the same storm all the way over here in Northern California, but we got tons of rain over the weekend (and even some snow up high), and I’m glad to know that we’re all the getting some water which we desperately need! See ya out there!

  12. I love the Bluebirds. I sure wish I had them here. I’ve never seen one here.
Hope your snow doesn’t stay around too long. It sure does look pretty though.

  13. Your home is just beautiful and classy. The gardens are adding a nice frame to the picture. And that little bluebird is most assuredly saying—what in this world did that guy do now. He told that others that up until this white stuff came along he was supporting your gardening habits.

  14. Phillip,

You’re right March isn’t over yet, but I hope the snows are. The bluebirds do seem to enjoy our open flight plan. Not much in the way of air traffic!

    Frances,

I took the picture from our upstairs window that overlooks the southern side of the garage roof so you’re right, I was inside enjoying the warm heater at the time! 😉 I’m surprised you didn’t get any snow, we had plenty.

    Nancy,

Ample is a good word! Ample for us at least. For you folks up north it’s probably a run of the mill type snowfall. Fun to see though!

    Grumpy,

Ah, how could I have missed that! My bird lingo is not up to snuff. Poor little guy I didn’t even notice he was frozen to the gutter, no wonder I was able to take so many pictures! 😉

    Helen,

He sure is. I’ll pass that along to him next time I see him!

    Stephanie,

Ah but grumpy let us in on what was really happening, his feet were frozen to the gutter. 😉 I’m not sure he ever saw me which definitely helps to get bird pictures. The water is good, I just hope this summer it rains also.

    Anna,

If only I could control the snow. Then I might be able to control the rain as well, and wouldn’t that be good for gardeners? Thanks for the comments on our house!

  15. Nice shots of the Bluebird. He does look out of his element. I haven’t seen Bluebirds yet this year but we did get your snow yesterday here in Maryland.

  16. Pretty stuff that white snow! Atlanta had it share of the white stuff but here in Augusta, we only had a few flurries. Some children in the Deep South saw snow for the first time in their young life! That is the good thing to southern snowfalls, they dont hang around long…
