What I Did Over the Weekend

I wish I could have gotten to this post earlier but Monday’s storms kept the computer off for most of the day. It’s pretty difficult to type a post without electricity! As of this morning 18,000 people in Middle Tennessee are still without power. Over the weekend the weather was absolutely perfect for outdoor activities. I’ll share some more highlights later in the week including the tulips blooming in the front garden, the changes to my sedum bed, the strawberry blossoms blooming, and hopefully some more seeds germinating in the vegetable garden. All of which were tackled at some point over the weekend.

Here’s a short list of what garden chores managed to tackle this weekend in the garden:

  • Mowed the Lawn – it was tall, very tall. I nearly lost the 3 year old in it! It did make for a whole lot of grass clipping mulch though!
  • Cut another path or two through the brambles on our slope. 
  • Collected Grass Clipping mulch for layering in the vegetable garden.
  • Planted two plum trees.
  • Weeded the patio gardens and added mulch.
  • Weeded the Birdbath garden and added mulch.
  • Weeded the viburnum/rose garden and added mulch.
  • Watered the plants in the garden shed.
  • Began redoing the sedum bed. We had massive deaths in our sedum garden last year for some reason. I lost most of the red leaved varieties. ‘Blue Spruce’, ‘Autumn Joy’ and another unknown variety are coming back fine but the small ground cover varieties suffered badly. Fortunately a few sprigs remain so they may come back. Also it needed a drainage issue fixed which is in progress. Hopefully I can share the results of the sedum bed remodel soon.
  • Fed the birds! It’s been a while!

    1. You were busy! Hope the weather stays calmer for you for a while. I'm guessing the garden handled all the weather fine. I see a theme there with the mulch. I usually mulch in May. I want to find all those self seeders and let the ground warm up. By mid May everything has sprouted or just isn't coming back.

    2. I am jealous that you actually got out and got your hands dirty. Can't wait to see the photos of the viburnums, I am a sucker for every one of those beauties.

    3. Blue Spruce did not come back fine! Having five or six sprigs left after it used to cover the whole area is not fine! 😛 We will have to buy some more.

    5. Your ever growing list of chores Dave. I always feel as if I need to remind you to sleep….we had bad, bad storms here early this morning. Have some tree limbs scattered across the lawn, one big one feel right by the house, whew!

    6. I am glad you did not loose your 3 year old, LOL. You were busy. We stayed out of the gardens due to the soggy spring mess. The wind was too high for limb pick up in the woods. We like to stay clear of the woods during high winds, I call this cheap insurance. Just when the yard was drying out, your storm passed through here last night. 3am was the magical hour for us. More sogginess and high winds today, sigh. But calling for super good weather with the next 5 day forecast…

    7. You sure have been busy, Dave. Loosing a 3 yr. old in your yard. That means your grass was very tall, like mine. lol Will have to get my 9 yr. old ggs to cut it for me.
      We got that storm around 6 this morning. Lightening was horrible.
