Here’s another idea I had for my herb garden. I’ve been planning my vegetable garden with a shrub/perennial ring around it. This herb corridor would lead up to a small entry gate going into the garden area. The beginning of the corridor would start close to our future patio (a project for later this year). The herb garden would have the same plants as my earlier plan but the numbers on this plan have changed. I added four butterfly bushes to bring some flower color and pollinators to the herb garden.
The advantage to having it in a corridor/pathway is mostly convenience. It’s closer to the house and easier to reach the plants than my other plan would have been. The disadvantage is probably that it won’t have the formal look. That’s OK since it’s more practical and I like things a little less formal anyway!
Here is the key for the herb garden:
- Stepping Stones: the stones will be recessed into the turf and planted with a low growing stepable ground cover like thyme.
- Butterfly Bushes: I have several cuttings of butterfly bush that I started in the fall.
- Rosemary: I have four cuttings that are rooted and need to get two more.
- Purple Leaf Basil
- Miscellaneous Herbs: Italian parsley, chives, mint (in pots!), Thyme, and cilantro
- Italian Basil
I’m not sure if I’ll go this route or the first one I designed. I may even do another design still. It all depends on the final placement of the vegetable garden.

I think I like this design better. It’s leading you somewhere suggesting another garden to explore. If you put a gate there even the better. Then definite suggestion of another garden. Like a mystery.
I love this design. You are really good at getting it down on paper, or on your computer. Do you have a program of some kind that does that? I will never be able to do it but can admire your work!

I like this design better too!
And I think it does look formal…
Dave, this design is really nice. It’s so soothing to walk down a path, past beautiful herbs.
I have a nice herb garden here but my dream herb garden would also have a clothes line above it. I dream that I would hang my sheets and linens on that line and they’d smell like lavender, lemon and more delicious things.
Someday……..
I like your design! I love having fresh herbs! I grow mine in big pots up on my deck, for several reasons…keeps them close to the kitchen so I can run out and cut as needed while I’m cooking and there’s better lighting there for after-dark gathering. Also, being close to the house the hungry rabbits tend to stay away. The pots look and smell good, too, which is a bonus when DH and I are sitting on the deck.
I like your graphics. The butterfly bush will smell nice near the path. It’s great that you did your own cuttings.
I like this layout better as well, and I don’t agree that it isn’t as pretty as the round layout. I think the short pretty walk that brings you into another garden is a wonderful idea. Also, having herbs accessible to the kitchen is very important. I love butterfly bushes, but I’d be worried they would get too big and take over. Can’t wait to see the pictures once it’s done, especially in a year once the herb plants have settled and grown into their space.
