Shirley Tulips in Bloom |
And here’s where you can find Shirley! The Front Sidewalk Garden. This is the third year the tulips have come back in this garden. I’ve heard people complain about tulips not returning but these have been very faithful. The front sidewalk garden is located on the north side of our house and receives little sunlight during the winter which probably helps with those necessary chill hours. The purple tulips are ‘Negrita’ and I’ll show more of them later in the week. Neither type of tulip has peaked yet but they are close. In the center of the walkway is creeping phlox which I plan to highlight later in the week also.

That's a beauty, but don't call me Shirley.
Lucky you to have them come back! Most of my hybrids have not returned but I planted a few colorful ones last fall. I think I'll treat them as annuals from now on. The species are just beginning to bloom now and they last a pretty long time.
Sadly I don't have any. I think it's too warm here for them. I do think they are a pretty flower.
I am sent three months of indoor bulb gardens as an annual holiday gift. Each spring I take the forced bulbs outdoors and plant them in a new spot. Some come back the next spring, some probably never make it, but each spring is so different that I'd never notice! I love the surprises I find each year.
I have the same mix, Shirley, Negrita and another purple variety as well as a few yellow and peach ones. I have a few Mickey Mouse tulips as well, they're red and yellow striped.
I've had great luck with the species tulips, fostereana and gregii. Then there are the bags of tulips I grab at Costco each year! I want to plant a river of them under Hedge…he's way too expensive to remove, so a river of colorful tulips will look spectacular…I hope! gail
Dave,
Tulips..my wife favorite flower 🙂
I am particularly fond of the "front sidewalk picture." This should get the tulips explore to much sunlight – which is the right way to plant tulips.
