2010 Seed Selections

Last week I received the seeds I orders from two different companies. I was very impressed with the delivery time from both Wildseed Farms and Baker’s Creek Heirloom Seeds. I made my order from Baker’s Creek last Monday and received all the seeds I ordered plus a bonus packet by Wednesday! That was very fast service. The crazy thing to me was the little note they put inside the envelope that basically said “we’re sorry this took so long.” I realize that the note probably went to everyone who ordered seeds, but really the only way it could have gotten here any faster is through some sort of Star Trek teleporter! There is definitely no need to apologize for a 2 day turn around. I’m sure that this is the kind of attitude and work ethic that has earned them such a great reputation.

From Wildseed Farms:

  • Sea Shells Cosmos
  • Yellow Cosmos-Klondyke Mix
  • Tetra Versailles Cosmos
  • Autumn Beauty Mix (Sunflowers)
  • California Poppy
  • Clasping Coneflower
  • Dwarf Red Plains Coreopsis
  • Scarlet Sage

From Baker’s Creek:

  • Jenny Lind Melon
  • Old Time Tennessee Melon
  • Purple Podded Pole Bean
  • Cosmic Purple Carrot
  • Persian Carpet Zinnia
  • Basil – Dark Purple Opal
  • Echinacea Paradoxa or Ozark Yellow Coneflower
  • Tom Thumb Lettuce
  • Rouge d’Hiver Lettuce
  • Little Gem Lettuce
  • Crookneck Early Golden Summer Squash
  • Royal Chico Tomato
  • Pantano Romanesco Tomato
  • Woodle Orange Tomato
  • Black Krim Tomato

Many of these seeds are new to my garden. The Echinacea paradoxa is a true yellow coneflower that I believe is one of the plants used to hybridize many of the new fancy coneflower colors we see now.  I’m kind of excited to see the Tom Thumb lettuce which is a very small lettuce which grows to about 3-4 inches in size. I thought the kids would enjoy seeing them grow. I’m excited to add so many heirlooms to the mix this year. Hopefully, if I’m diligent, I can save the seed and reduce my seed budget for next year. The total cost from Baker’s Creek was $36 after shipping and Wildseed farms was $14.95.

Into the garden we go, beam me up Scotty!
(Just in case it’s necessary I am in no way affiliated with either of the companies above and paid for everything out of my pocket.)

  1. Tina,

I like diversity in the garden! (At least that's my excuse for my seed addiction.)

    Gisele,

Their catalog is one of the best I've seen. The pictures just about make you drool!

    Cameron,

More seeds? Are you kidding? 😉 I would never buy anymore seeds…OK you caught me, I have one more company to order from next week!

  2. I just started following you, as I think your Blog is wonderful. I have grown all of the seeds you ordered from Wildseed Farms. And still have the seeds (collected from the plants I grew). Just wondering how you plan to sow and if they were just for collecting…LOL. If you ever looking for seeds give me a shout I might just have it. And always open for a trade.

  3. Shady,

I do think it's important to prop up those companies that do a really fine job!

    Skeeter,

It depends. I'll probably do a little of both. Vegetables will be planted in starting pots while some will be direct sowed. The flowers will initially be potted them planted. As I can harvest seed each year I'll scatter more about.

    Kim,

Thanks for following! No not just for collecting – I really like the growing part. You have to grow them to collect them right? 😉 It's a cycle!

  4. Yeah True! But I have a seed addiction and I find myself, buying, gathering, and then in turns into collecting as I take years to grow them. I recently started seeds I bought 5 years ago..LOL LOL. I keep telling myself "You can't grow everything you see Kim" 🙂 How do you like the peat pellets? Do you use vermiculite? Do they ever dampen off?

  5. I haven't ordered mine yet, I did sit down and make out my list and flip through a few catalogs. My mom, sister and I are going to get together this week for a seed ordering day, we like to split packs of seeds that sound interesting. Can't wait.
