Since so much of the garden right now is suffering from lack of adequate rainfall I thought it might be a good time to look back at a few past plant propagation posts. Some of these are favorites of mine and hopefully they will be useful for you too!
Propagating Shrubs:
- ‘Shasta’ Viburnum plicatum var. tormentosa – A beautiful deciduous shrub that is one of my favorite garden plants. It can get large if you let it. It blooms in the spring and often will have berries that are great for the birds.
- Hydrangeas – Hydrangeas can be extremely easy plants to propagate and the look amazing in the garden. I made a video you can view on this page as well so follow the link to learn more on propagating hydrangeas.
Propagating Perennials:
- Russian Sage – Russian sage is a purple/lavender blooming perennial or sub-shrub. It’s hardy here in Tennessee and many other areas. What makes it amazing is it’s deer resistance. Deer never touch Russian sage!
- ‘Powis Castle’ artemisia – Powis Castle is a plant I grow for the foliage. It has silver colored leaves and can spread to fill in areas. It will self layer to some extent but cuttings root fairly easily as well.
- ‘Husker’s Red’ Penstemon – If you need a plant for hummingbirds penstemon is a good one. Husker’s Red has burgundy red foliage and shoots up flower stalks with white bell shaped flowers.
Propagating Grasses:
- Switchgrass (Panicum) – Propagating switch grass is easily done through division like most grasses.
