Arbor Day 2008

Plant a tree. It’s a simple enough sentiment. They give us shelter, they give us shade and fruit, and they give us life. There are so many reasons why you should plant a tree that the opposing list of why not to plant a tree is very short. In fact some of those reasons are way out there.

“I don’t have room.” Then give one as a gift.
“I don’t have time.” It doesn’t take very long at all to plant a small tree. You can even have someone do it for you!
“I don’t like trees.” Then I guess you don’t like shade, fruit, paper, or many other products that come from trees.
“I don’t like oxygen.” Well you’re just out of luck then!

OK I’m being a little silly here but really, trees are very important to us and our world’s ecology. Without them we would be without so many things. Over the past week I’ve tried to highlight the world of trees a little. There is a lot of material to cover about trees and I only lightly touched any of the potential subjects. Here is what I talked about:

Here’s what trees and shrubs we have planted this year: Red Maple (Acer rubrum), Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis), Redbud (Cercis canadensis), Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera), Blueberry Bushes (Vaccinium), Several ‘Hiroki Nishiki’ Dappled Willows (Salix integra)

Here are some other tree related posts for Arbor Day! If you have one to submit to this list comment and let me know and I’ll add your post!

  1. Way to remind us of Arbor Day, Dave. I wonder why Earth Day is not on the same day as Arbor Day, they are so closely related? Those dappled willows are great, aren’t they? Talk about being easy to propagate, all you have to do is stick a piece in the ground, like most willows. We cut ours to the ground each spring to have a small mound of pink and white foliage, lovely.

  2. I had forgotten about Arbor Day. It used to be a big thing when I was I school. I guess it’s been “overshadowed” by the far reaching “branches” of Earth Day. Thanks for the reminder. I think I’ll plant my replacement trees now:)

  3. Dave, What a great post and idea…you just don’t hear about Arbor Day at all anymore.

Hmmm, I am now intrigued by the willow.

  4. I planted a Red Maple too, they remind me of my grandparents farm, they had several.

What I really want to plant now is a Magnolia ‘Saucer’ but I think my partner would “freak out” due to all the planting I have been doing and $$ spending. I’ll have to wait until he is visiting his family in Alabama the second week of May – LOL 🙂

  5. I’ve read all your tree posts with interest and enthusiasm. I posted a tree-related post on Soliloquy today. 🙂 Nova Scotia celebrates Arbor Day on the Thursday during National Forest Week, which is the first full week in May. May 8th this year. 🙂 I WILL be planting a tree!
