Oh Deer!

I thought the deer were gone but I was wrong. After a house was built behind the woods that skirts the edge of our property I thought the deer had left but when I returned home last weekend from my trip I discovered that the deer made a return.

While they could easily make it into my vegetable garden they haven’t yet. Maybe it’s not worth jumping the fence to get my towering tomatoes, but most likely they just haven’t found the garden yet. They did find, and dine on, a little red maple I planted in the back of our property. It should recover from its leaf stripping as long as the deer don’t return for a second course. I put together a little present for the deer should they return. The crushed garlic and rosemary in an old sock tied to the little maple might do the trick, but then again maybe the deer will just appreciate the extra seasoning. Let’s hope not!

  1. They are such pigs! Fortunately they don't visit everyday, but they stop by occasionally to chomp on my Asters & Phlox in the front garden. I just discovered the other day that my Phlox weren't blooming because the stupid deer ate off all buds. Grrr. I've got to be more diligent with the spray on repellent. I've noticed that the 5 foot fence around the back is enough of a deterrent so far to make the deer move on to easier pickings. I hope they also continue to respect your fence.

  2. It is a shame that such a beautiful creature has to be a nuisance to a garden. Fortunately I don’t have to deal with deer where I live. I think my dog Spaz would go crazy! 🙂

  3. I have the same problem. For years they stayed away until this year, when there was some building in the property behind me. I guess I’ll have to put up the electric fence. I have too many gardens to spray with the repellent.

  4. It used to be that only the folks who lived in the country/out of town that had deer…I fear we shall have them soon…more houses being built on the ridges means less land for them. sigh!

Hoping they get the message to stay away from your place.

  5. Darn deer! I hope they leave your garden alone. They’re nice to look at, but they’re giant pigs when it comes to plants in the yard. I wonder if they’d stay away better if you hung some soap on the tree?

Thanks for stopping by my blog, it’s nice to meet you.

  6. nancy,

So far they are, at least this year. last year I didn’t have a fence around our vegetables and they ate everything!

    Mr. Mc’s Daughter,

They do have a voracious appetite! As longs as they stay where they are in the pictures I don’t mind. I’ll be researching deer proof plants for planting back there soon.

    PG,

I do like looking at them. We don’t see them too often. These one’s were visiting at 6:30 or so in the morning. Dogs do keep them at bay!

    Tina,

I hope not! So far they’ve left the maple alone…

    Aunt Debbie,

Are you sure you don’t want them? You could bring a truck and ship them to your yard!

    Catherine,

Loss of habitat drives them into other places. Behind us the neighbor’s dog was keeping them away. They may have just been on vacation and the deer became more comfortable coming to visit. whatever the case I hope they stay away, good luck with you’re deer. A fence sounds like the way to go!

    Gail,

You’re probably right. We’ll see more deer in suburban neighborhoods grazing on our gardens. I don’t mind them as long as I can keep some areas off limits, like the veggies!

    Cinj,

The soap is a good idea! We were almost all out of soap at the time so it wasn’t an option! Nice to meet you too Cinj!

  7. How lovely to have deer roaming on your property. I love them. Must remind me of Bambi. 🙂 I’m sure your daughter feels the same way. lol. They are cute, little things, as long as they don’t eat your veggies. 🙂

  8. I was just reading about how Deer are creatures of habit so if they find food, they will return!

I use Dial Soap hanging around the 2 foot tall fencing to keep the bunny out of the veggies. So far seems to be working and the veggies are next to the plum tree where the deer munched down on plums this year!

You are calling them in with your sweet scents Dave! Maybe that seasoning will keep them at bay or as others have said, they will like the addition to the salad!
