Every year one of the great performances in my garden is the performance of the poppies. These simple red flowers came in a free packet of seed several years ago and still keep on putting on powerful displays of red paper-like petals. With as easy as poppies are to grow and maintain (I do nothing other than spread the seeds every now and then) it makes me wonder why they aren’t in every garden? Poppy seeds planted in the fall bloom the following spring and produce seed pods with lots of little tiny poppy seeds. I think I should add a few additional colors of poppies to the self-sowing garden for some variety.

Dave, I love poppies of all varieties, but have never had any luck growing the annual kinds from seed. They're the kind of plant that is dead easy where the conditions are right, but if not… But I'm so eager for that 30-second display of crinkly paper petals, that I'm willing to put up with tatty yellowing foliage taking space in my tiny garden. It's worth it. Happy growing!
You are so lucky! I cannot get Poppies to grow here for the life of me! And I love them!!!
Poppies! Yours are corn poppies. Love the red ones, which follow the bigger pinks and reds and oranges that are the breadseed poppies. California poppies like my climate in the spring but melt out in summer.
I scatter more poppy seeds every fall.
Just planted poppies this Spring. Seems like the wrong time, but we'll see. Will plant more this Fall. I really like that red pop.
I just harvested a ton of the red breadseed poppies with the purple center, interested?
Fell in love with poppy last year when we first saw them bloom in our garden. Just transplanted some seedlings. But I keep on forgetting about them that I step on some whenever we water the garden. Yours are lovely red.
That is a great display. I have some in my garden and let them self seed where they want.
I sure am, Darla. I really like them but so far I haven't been lucky with them.
They sure are sweet! Something I cannot grow in my garden:(
