This spring I bought this pineapple sage at a garden show fully expecting it to thrive and burst into colorful red blooms. Well I can say one thing, it is thriving! For some reason the blooms are just now beginning to form despite it growing to a size of about three and a half feet round. It has nearly overtaken the ‘Little Giant’ arborvitae planted next door. The blooms that are forming should begin to put on their show within the next week but I could have sworn that my pineapple sage from last year bloomed much earlier!
In other blooming news my Gossypium herbaceum ‘Nigrum’ is in bloom, that would be cotton. I mentioned this cotton on the Facebook page last night. It’s gorgeous blooms would be much better displayed if planted enmass in a better location. I’ll blame the local gardener for that. He’s always sticking stuff in the wrong place.
And here’s one more picture for the day just to show that fall is coming…
Soon the rest of this crape myrtle will be just as fiery color as the leaf! Are signs of fall in your area yet?
Tons of fall signs in our area but not due to the time of year but more the drought. Brown leaves falling off the trees as if fall.
I had a difficult time getting you blog today. My computer says something on your blog is slowing down the process… ???….
PLENTY of rain last evening. Not too much damage. No signs of Fall except garden has slowed down. Some Fall veggies planted, hoping for some produce.
My pineapple sage is just now beginning to bloom but I checked my blog recently and I have pictures of it in its glory in November-so it is still too early. Winter over cuttings inside and you'll never be without again though, as you found out, they grow HUGE.
Was the sage grown from seed or cutting? By seed would explain the big bloom time difference. Just a thought.
Skeeter,
I'll look into the slow down. I'm not sure what it could be. Many of our leaves are brown and green right now so our fall color may not be quite as colorful as I would wish!
Lola,
Good luck with that fall garden! I'm hoping for a good one too.
Tina,
I'm glad to know it isn't only mine. I forgot when my last one bloomed, should have looked back on the blog!
Patrick,
I'm not sure really. I bought it from someone else. It could have been either. I'll be taking cuttings though and bringing them indoors so I won't need to buy it next year.
Dave, Another rainy day today. That makes it four in a row and this is to go on for four more days. Glad there is an internet so I can garden “on line” on days like this. The benefit is that I get to look over past postings of those like you that I follow. I love the smell of pineapple sage. I grew it for two years. This year no room. You would think with over seven acres on Lake MIchigan I could find room. It's not the lack of room, it is the lack of making more gardens that keeps out the pineapple sage this year. I figure thirteen garden rooms is enough already – well maybe for now. NIce visiting today. Jack
