Finally some rain! This weekend is bringing us some much needed rain, unfortunately it’s in the form of thunderstorms. I guess that’s better than nothing. The last few weeks have been much drier than a normal April. “April showers” is the well known cliche but it just hasn’t seemed to work out that way. So far today we’ve received over an inch of badly needed rain with more in the forecast – perfect for watering trees, shrubs, and of course the vegetable garden!
This coming week should bring our first real harvests from the vegetable garden which will consist of the lettuce and other salad greens. The tomatoes have been planted but due to our frost pocket situation suffered a little damage early in the week. Fortunately most will recover fine. The potatoes look great and I’ve noticed that the zucchini seeds have germinated. It won’t be long before the summer crops begin!
Here’s what’s on the agenda for this week:
- Clean up more of the gardens from weeds.
- Plant a few more plants I have sitting around in pots.
- Propagate a few more plants for the plant swap in May.
- Plant seeds for summer blooming annuals including cosmos (a great annual!), sunflowers, zinnias, marigolds, and anything else I run across!
- Tinker in the garden shed

Lucky you, here it's still dry as a bone, my garden needs rain soon.
Happy gardening this weekend!
I wish we would get some rain. The gardens are full of cracks from the earth drying out already.
Your garden sounds lovely. So much going on. Things here are still slow. We are due for thunderstorms tomorrow. We need some rain but rather not the thunderstorms.
It's really intriguing to find out what weather is doing elsewhere, Dave. This has been a dry April for us too, way moreso than ever I can remember. Some parts of the garden that are normally soggy now are just damp; others are getting dry. It's very, very weird. I'm glad you had rain, even if it was in the form of thunderstorms. We had those yesterday off to the north-east of us, but not enough rain to really make a difference. Happily, I have clay, springs, and mulch, so I rarely do any watering, except of new shrubs and trees.
Yeah for the rain! Everything looks so green and lush. Now to pick up all those branches that blew down:( Enjoy your lettuce!
You are doing a wonderful job of informational blogging, Dave. I'm having trouble keeping up, though!! (My problem, not yours!) 😉
I use rain for seed-sowing and got my zinnias and cosmos out in the garden.
Dave, Is that pretty yellow flower Golden Ragwort! It's a great plant~ Officially nashville had almost three inches of rain…I think more! My garden wagon is filled to thew top! Even with the mushed flowers the garden looked fantastic after the rain cleared the air! Have a good week! gail
