A Couple weeks ago a friend from Texas sent me a 5 tiered Greenstalk Vertical Planter. It’s an interesting concept for a planter that allows you to grow vertical and save on garden space. The planter came shipped with the 5 tiers, the top watering reservoir, a stand with wheels, a short drain tube for excess water, and of course instructions!

The planter has 5 levels or tiers that hook together and stack to create the vertical planter. With 6 planting pockets and 5 tiers that makes 30 planting spots for vegetables or flowers.
When putting the planter together I filled each level separately with soil then stacked them together. In between the levels there are round trays that fit to catch the water as it flows from top to bottom through the vertical planter. Those intermediate trays help to slow the water and spread it out into the planting areas.

In the picture below you can see how the water is flowing from the planter tier above. The white/gray piece is the intermediate tray that catches the water.
What can You Plant in the Greenstalk Planter?
I began planting the planter with a couple plants from the garden like cilantro and kale but I plan to plant the majority of the planter with seeds.
The Greenstalk planter can grow nearly anything you want to grow from the vegetable garden and will also grow all kinds of ornamentals. Essentially if you can grow it in a pot you can use this planter. I’ll be planting some snap pea seeds toward the top of the planter so that as they grow the peas will cascade down. Since it’s fall I’ll be planting seeds for some great fall vegetables like kale, lettuce, and radishes. In the spring I may integrate the planter with some flowers to attract pollinators.
What I like about the planter is I will have a convenient spot to gather vegetables just off of our kitchen. In fact having a convenient planter on the back deck is one of the best features of the planter. If you have limited space the planter will allow you to grow up and maximize that space. What is also nice is that the planter has some height which may make it easier to plant and harvest from for people with mobility issues or who have trouble bending over.
The planter has a drain spout that will redirect the water where you want it. The hose that can with it was a little shorter than I would like but you can easily find another hose to hook up to it with a better length at you local hardware store. Then you can take that hose and direct it into a water storage container like a bucket and use that water to water your plants. Or maybe just make a longer hose out to a garden area where you need more water.

Overall I’m pretty excited to try the Greenstalk Planter system and can’t wait to see what I can grow with it. If you are looking for something like this you can find Greenstalk available on Amazon (affiliate link).
