Every month Gardening Gone Wild has a picture contest and I thought for August I would submit my first entry. The subject for the contest is “Down On Your Knees.” David Perry, the photography judge, is encouraging gardeners and shutterbugs to look at their gardens and plants in a different perspective. In the spirit of the competition I took quite a few pictures and experimented a little then came up with this picture of my ‘Powis Castle’ artemisia flanked by a ‘Mystic Spires’ salvia and a ‘Black and Blue’ salvia. In the background of the picture is the tree line of our backyard but from this perspective the salvias appear much taller.
The artemisia has been my favorite new addition in my garden this year and I can’t say enough good things about it. The only negative is that it grew larger and faster than I expected! But is that truly a negative? And to make ‘Powis Castle’ even more fun it’s easy to root. I have 8 on my front porch rooted already with 1 I planted a couple weeks earlier to make 9. The ‘Mystic Spires’ fades in our winters but I’ll keep adding it to the garden since the hummingbirds like it and the blooms are perfect for August. The ‘Black and Blue’ salvia made it through the winter last year and I’m hopeful it will do so again!
Stop on over to GGW and see what other photos are being entered!
Cool photo..the black and blue Salvia is new for me this year…I do hope mine will survive the winter too.
Lucky you to have the black and blue return. Mine did not but I hoped!
Great looking pic. of the saliva. My Black & Blue did make it through the winter here with protection. I must propagate some to plant in other places. I really like that color.
My black&blue salvia didn't make it through a fairly cold zone 8 winter, but then I made no attempts to protect it; except for a few, it's live free or die in my garden (no, I don't come from New Hampshire).
Enjoyed the notes about Powis Castle's growing habits, I'm an artemesia fan big time. Just have been hanging out with sagebrush and mugwort.
