On Friday my daughter and I planted another set of seeds. These were all for the vegetable garden and they were all even in the same family, nightshade. We planted a several varieties of tomatoes and peppers in our peat pot system. We’re still waiting on a few more seeds to come in through the mail. April 15 is the normal last frost date here in TN and we’re starting these seedlings about 6 weeks early. The squash, cucumbers, and other vegetables I plant directly in the ground while I start the tomatoes and peppers early and should be ready to go in ground right around mid April.
Here’s what we started:
Tomato Varieties |
Pepper Varieties |
---|---|
Yellow Pear (heirloom) NIMG | Ornamental Peppers NIMG |
Brandywine (heirloom) VY | California Wonder Y |
Better Boy Y | Cardinal Hybrid VY |
Supersweet 100 VY | Big Dipper Y |
Beefmaster Y | Cayenne Y, also HOT |
Roma VFN Y | |
Viva Italia Roma VY | |
Big Boy Hybrid VY |
Codes: NIMG – New in my garden, VY – Very Yummy, Y – Yummy, No other code is necessary as anything less than yummy doesn’t deserve to be planted!
Hi Dave,
It sure looks like you have a good start on your seedlings already. I will be starting mine soon, I live in Indiana and have a bad habit of starting my seeds too early. My favorites are pineapple tomatoes (heirloom) and Califonia wonder peppers. I always grow plenty of roma tomatoes for sauces and other things, they are great for canning.
Quite a variety of tomatoes Dave. Looking forward to seeing all your seeds.
You are going to have maters running out your ears! lol…
Vicki,
I think I started ours too early last year. The tomatoes had roots running out all over the place. This year I think I timed it better. I think it will be a big tomato sauce year!
Tina,
I think I’ll try a couple new varieties each year, just to see what there is. I’m sure in my lifetime I’ll never get to try them all. There are just too many!
Skeeter,
That’s how I like em, running out my ears!
What a smart man you are. Guess I should start my peppers and maters too!
Hi Dave, how fun to plant the seeds as a family. You are a good man! 🙂 I liked what you said to Skeeter too, how you like ’em running out your ears! You are also a funny man! 🙂
Frances
I tried to get my son interested in gardening…I needed to start earlier! I am cheating and waiting until my favorite produce store offers the heirlooms ready to plant! One day I will figure out where in this house I can start seeds~gail
Dave, you sound like my brother–Not a meal unless you have lots of maters. I like them too. In fact I like just plain ole’ mater sandwiches. Ate ’em all my life.
Mine sure don’t do good here. Don’t know what the problem is. Gotta keep trying though.
Yum, yum. I’ve started mine too. Some are doing better than others. Good luck with yours.~~Dee
I thought it was such a funny coincidence (even though it is that time of year so I’m sure we’re not the only ones) because my father and I also started our tomatoes and peppers for the year. Unfortunately some of our seeds were a little over their recommended expiration date, and didn’t sprout. But the seeds we ordered just came in so…
Hurray for veggies!
