Thinking of Warmer Days

I’m definitely ready for warmer days ahead. How about you?

Here’s just a quick picture from our ‘Forest Pansy’ redbud (Cercis canadensis) taken back in May. The purple foliage reverts to a greenish foliage in the summertime. These are usually propagated by grafting the ‘Forest Pansy’ scion onto seed grown root stock. I haven’t ventured into the grafting area yet but it does fascinate me. I was looking at some apple trees in a catalog this weekend and was reminded of how grafting can provide disease resistance and adjust the growth habits of a tree. Grafting is very cool stuff! Have you ever grafted anything successfully?

  1. Dear Dave
What is that about being "scraped" ?
I haven't attempted a graft but we did have an apple tree which was a 4 variety graft and for some reason it just never did well .. thus it was booted out for the Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry .. for which we would love to try out the berries if that darn Robinator doesn't beat us to them again this year !!!

  2. I've never grafted but I've thought about it. It's fascinating to see one plant rise from being joined to another.

  3. Mr. S,

Thanks for the notice! I sent a message to the host of the site and received their DMCA instructions. Then I went to the site and posted a comment in one of my posts about content theft and them illegally using my material. I received an email informing me that they had removed my posts. Leave a comment for them and see if it works for you – make sure you directly tell them to remove the posts and it is illegal content theft. Dropping the threat of reporting the DMCA to the host may have scared them.

  4. Joy,

I'm not sure many people have success with the 3-4 fruits on a tree graft. It's interesting but not effective apparently. Good luck beating the robinator!

    Lola,

    It is very cool stuff!

  5. Good for you Dave, taking care of those scrapers, and good for Mr. Sub for letting you know. As for grafting, it seems a perfect fit for you, Dave. Making more plants! 😉
