It’s been a busy weekend. We’ve been out of town since Friday visiting the in-laws house. I spent much of the weekend working on their landscape trying to get some things ready for the wedding in July. My task has been to spruce up various areas that will be around the wedding. I won’t be doing any flower arranging just fixing up what’s there and disguising some areas of the yard.
So here’s what I accomplished:
- With the help of my two brothers-in-law I moved 2 300-400 pound rocks and one 100-200 pound rock to help line an area. They are blended into a border and can now serve as seating. That was tough. I’ll talk about that project later.
- I planted various shade plants including heuchera (‘Palace Purple’), several hostas, ferns, and coleus.
- I planted a rhododendron.
- We brought up enough rocks from the back of the property to finish most of border around the shade garden.
- I moved a redbud tree from another area of the property a spot just outside the shade garden. It was a small one (3-4 ft.) and wasn’t very difficult to move.
- I collected several native ferns and moved them to the shade garden to mix with the purchased Autumn ferns.
- I collected two redbud trees for our yard.
- I planted several annuals and two salvias in the front garden including annual verbena, petunias and Salvia splendens. I planted a white perennial salvia that will mix with the purple verbena. The red Salvia splendens went in near a small pathway next to a spirea.
- I took lots of pictures for future posts! I’ll be talking about the shade garden soon.
Here’s what I need to do this week in my landscape:
- Start planting in my raised bed vegetable garden! Tomatoes and peppers will go in first followed by some cucumber seeds and squash.
- Finish cleaning out the shade garden corner. I have some plants that need put in and one that needs removed.
- Another mowing for the lawn.
- The zinnias and sunflower seeds need planted.
- Some Russian sage needs moved to another spot. That spot needs prepared and the sod needs moved.
- I need to revise my big to-do list sometime soon.
- More tree posts!
- Mulch, mulch and more mulch.
There’s the short list. I’ve forgotten something but I’m sure it will pop up when I’m least expecting it!

A gardeners work is never done!
Do you ever get spammed? And if not-what is your secret?
You certainly had a productive weekend, and I’m sure your family is grateful. 🙂
How did you move those boulders?
We have some near our house and I am always eying them but dont think there is any way we could get them into our yard.
It sounds as though you have a nice plan in motion to make the wedding day special…
Ah, to be strong like you! You accomplished an amazing amount at the in laws. So is it time for squash and beans and zinnia seeds to go in? I have read that when the lilacs bloom it is time, but the soil seems a little cool. I would love to go ahead though.
Tina,
Spring is definitely a busy time! I get spammed occasionally and delete it as soon as I can identify it as spam.
Nancy,
I think so, I hope everything comes together well!
Skeeter,
Very carefully! There were three of us and we used some metal poles to lift it up enough to get underneath the rocks. Then we flipped them to their destination. It took some time but we got them there and no one had a foot or finger smashed!
Frances,
I’m not sure about correct timing but the weather man said this months was going to feel more like May than April. Today’s high will be near 80 I think. The squash I’ll plant from seed so any extra time it can get will be good. Since I’m putting them in raised beds the soil ought to be warm enough. The zinnias need a place to go so I have some prep work to do.
I don’t know why some blogs get on the spam list and some don’t. It is so frustrating and annoying. Glad you don’t get it.
Wow…I leave town and sit around all day, you leave town and work! You are a good son-in-law!
